An essential guide to Dubai

A few practical basics for first-time visitors.

Arriving in Dubai

Many nationalities qualify for a visa on arrival, but every visitor should check the latest UAE entry requirements before travelling. Dubai International Airport (DXB) and Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC) provide public transport, taxis, car rental, currency exchange and visitor information services.

Weather

Dubai has a warm coastal climate throughout the year. From October to May, temperatures are generally around 20–35°C (68–95°F). From June to September, daytime temperatures can reach the mid-40s°C (about 110°F).

Money and payments

Dubai uses the UAE dirham (AED), divided into 100 fils. The dirham is pegged to the US dollar at US$1 = AED3.67. Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted. Acceptance of other cards can vary, so carrying an alternative payment method is useful.

Phones and Wi-Fi

The UAE country code is +971. Tourist SIM options are available at the airport, and complimentary Wi-Fi is widely available in hotels, shopping centres, public spaces and many attractions.

Public transport

Dubai can be explored by road, rail and water. The Metro, public buses, taxis and marine transport provide convenient ways to travel across the city.

Languages

Arabic is the official language, and English is spoken widely across Dubai. The city is home to hundreds of nationalities, so many other languages are also commonly heard.

Dress code

Dubai is a cosmopolitan city where a wide range of clothing is accepted. Swimwear is suitable at beaches, waterparks, pools and spas, but not in business districts or shopping malls.

Modest clothing is appreciated in historic neighbourhoods and places of worship. Mosque visitors should cover their shoulders, arms and legs; women may also be asked to wear a headscarf.

Greetings and etiquette

Dubai is warm and welcoming. Handshakes are customary, although it is polite to allow a woman to initiate one. Alcohol is available to adults aged 21 and over in licensed hotels, restaurants, bars and specialist shops.

Tipping

Tipping is optional in Dubai. Leaving a little extra is common for good service, but the amount is a matter of personal preference and is not compulsory.

Electricity

The power supply is 220/240 volts and sockets use UK-standard three-pin plugs. Equipment designed only for 110 volts will require a suitable transformer.

Health

If you travel with prescribed medication, bring a doctor’s note and check the UAE rules for any controlled medicine before departure. Rashid, Latifa and Dubai Hospitals provide emergency services.

Emergency numbers

For emergencies anywhere in the UAE, call:

  • 999 Police
  • 998 Ambulance
  • 997 Fire Department / Civil Defence
  • 996 Coastguard

Other useful contacts include 800 4438 for tourist security issues, 800 342 for the Dubai Health Authority, and 600 545 555 for consumer-related concerns.
